“Gave myself a great chance to win today. Should be proud, but instead I feel absolutely horrible.”
That was a Twitter update from UB.com‘s Phil Hellmuth moments after he took seventh place in Event #41 of the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP), a $1,500 Omaha Hi/Low Eight or Better tournament this week. Hellmuth fell just short of capturing his 12th bracelet – which would have been his first in a non-Hold’em event – and silencing the haters who were on hand mocking and booing him during Thursday’s final table.
But it wasn’t meant to be for the 11-time bracelet winner. Hellmuth held on for dear life with a short stack for most of the day and eventually went down at the hands of John Gottleib, whose Ah-Ad-Qh-8c bested Hellmuth’s As-Th-3c-2h after all of the chips went in pre-flop. As usual, Hellmuth showed emotion after his elimination, but was gracious in defeat, shaking the hands of the six remaining players before he exited the ESPN final able arena.
Despite the regular criticism from his peers about his game, Hellmuth continues to make deep runs in events with large fields. Earlier this month, he took 15th in Event #8, a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em tournament that drew 2,341 entrants. His other cash of the series was a 50th place result in the $5,000 No Limit Hold’em Event, which attracted 792 of the top tournament players on the planet.
Hellmuth has also had a large degree of success on the World Poker Tour (WPT) this year, taking sixth place in the Bay 101 Shooting Star in San Jose in April. A month later, he finished seventh at the $25,000 Five Star Classic at the Bellagio, barely missing out on the televised final table. Those two scores accounted for more than $270,000, pushing his lifetime earnings over $9,000,000. Hellmuth has also cashed in the WSOP Main Event each of the past two years, taking 45th in 2008 ($154,400) and 436th in 2009 ($25,027).
He hasn’t won a tournament in three years, but his accomplishments on the live scene are still more impressive than most of his naysayers. Hellmuth has seven final table appearances on the circuit since 2008. Meanwhile, Full Tilt pro and friend Mike Matusow, who is always first in line to take a jab at Hellmuth, has made only three final tables during that time span. Hellmuth is also clobbered daily by forum members across the world, most of whom have never played a high-stakes tournament in their life.
His antics remain questionable at times, but Hellmuth’s unorthodox style has earned him enough success to label him among the top No Limit Hold’em tournament players in the game still today. Poker News Daily will be on the scene should Hellmuth make another deep run during the remaining weeks of the 2010 World Series of Poker.
Debuting in recent weeks was PokerStatic.com, brought to you by Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond. The site features poker-related video interviews and audio podcasts from Eric “EB” Bickel and Bret Oliverio. The hosting duo originated on Mediocre Poker Radio and can also be heard on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C. Poker News Daily sat down with Galfond to recap the site’s launch.
Poker News Daily: Talk about the need to launch a site in the poker podcast and video segment of the industry.
Phil Galfond: It seemed like an area we thought we could do pretty well in. We have a different approach and have been looking to focus more on the big online guys than the other sites are. We’re in that community already and have all of those contacts. Getting Bret and EB onboard was pretty big for us too.
PND: You have pretty established competition in sites like PokerRoad. What will separate PokerStatic from the pack?
Phil Galfond: We are taking a slightly different approach. We have an edge being in the online community compared to other sites. We have our hand on the pulse of what the online community is into.
PND: Your use of split screen interviews and other visual elements seems to give you a leg up on the competition. Talk about the logic behind creating the look of PokerStatic.
Phil Galfond: First, we got Bret and EB onboard. Then, the four of us started brainstorming what we could do better and what we’d want to see in a media site. We mentioned that it’d be easy to flip the video on and record what’s going on during an interview. So far, the response has been good.
PND: What guests are in the works in the coming weeks? What World Series of Poker (WSOP) plans does PokerStatic have?
Phil Galfond: We just finished recording with Annette Obrestad. For the WSOP, I think that’s where we’ll get a lot of content. We hang out with a lot of the guys we’re interviewing and we can beef up the video content then. We can find people to video blog at the WSOP for us as well. Overall, the WSOP will be huge for us.
PND: Talk about Bret and EB’s love of poker.
Phil Galfond: They’re really into it. They love what they’re doing and they’re really into poker. They view it as an opportunity to reach a wide audience.
PBD: What kinds of shows are you looking to add as the site grows?
Phil Galfond: We’re very open to anybody who is interested in having a show. Bret, EB, and I will always be brainstorming new shows and concepts, but there are only a few of us. There are a lot of people out there.
PND: Talk about Tom Dwan possibly facing off against Brian Townsend in the second incarnation of the Durrrr Challenge, as reported by Bluff Magazine.
Phil Galfond: That would be a fun one. Brian is more of a pure online player and Tom is the same way. They’re both so different, though. Both have risen to the top, but in completely different ways. Brian will spend, during the 50,000 hands, 20 times as much time as Tom will away from the tables thinking about it. He goes over things so extensively and he’ll be studying the tendencies a lot. That’s not what Tom does.
When they start out, I feel like Tom will probably have the edge, but Brian will work harder to adjust. Tom does his learning and adjusting while playing. Probably, some things come easier to Tom than other people.
PND: Are you still actively involved in BluefirePoker.com, your poker training site? Are there any more challenges to President Barack Obama planned?
Phil Galfond: We would like to reissue the challenge at some point, but BluefirePoker.com is going great. We just signed a new pro, Alix Martin, who is a mid-to high-stakes PLO guy. He’s also good at mathematical game theory and is a good fit for our site.
PNDL Talk about returning to the “High Stakes Poker” felts for Season 6.
Phil Galfond: It was fun. I played a lot more than I did the first time and got involved in some more big hands. I ended up losing a decent chunk, but had no regrets.
This shirt is technically inaccurate now in Washington State but still would make for a great rally souvenir.
I saw a horrifyingly disturbing video several weeks ago. In it, this dude is getting fucked by a horse … I know I know … not even gonna link to it. (Forget NSFW, this is NSFHumanity, let alone lunch; trust me, you don’t even wanna google “2 guys 1 horse” … unless you happen to enjoy YouTube reaction vids to interspecies snuff films that show a man dying after literally getting ripped a new one by a 900-pound equine lover.)
Crazy thing is, this Darwin Awards ceremony took place on a farm in Washington State, which apparently has some of the most lax laws anywhere against bestiality — in fact no laws, and thus no charges were pressed against the men who ran an underground bordello for zoophiles. (Seattle Times, fyi, safe to click)
A little stomach-wrenching legal perspective as the Supreme Court in Olympia prepares to consider the felonious nature of the very toughest state law anywhere against online poker. Later this month, the court will be taking up the 2007 case of Lee Rousso vs. State of Washington, where an online poker player challenges the constitutionality of Washington’s 2006 Internet Gambling Ban.
“>Click here to read Rousso’s original complaint. He filed seeking a declaratory judgment on the legality of playing poker online, as opposed to other forms of online gambling that are specifically illegal (sports betting) or legal (horse racing and lottery). His primary beef seems to be that the IGB violates the federal Commerce Clause. He also calls out the questionable political backscratching between representatives and the casino industry that he claims was really behind this law that infringes on his liberty.
Heavy stuff in the balance …
As the court prepares to hear the case — not sure who won then lost, but these matters almost always require a suck and re-suck to get this far — the PPA is gathering a force to turn whatever happens on May 27 into a media event. Rousso, who happens to be the PPA’s Washington State Director, is set to testify, and cheering him on from the steps of the Supreme Court will be Al D’Amato, John Pappas, and Phil Gordon (the only Team Full Tilter who lives in Washington State). They hope to rally enough local PPA members to turn online poker issues into a noble courthouse spectacle.

To be fair, even though the storyline being pushed is that this wretched law puts poker on par with child molestation, that’s a touch misleading. Playing online poker is just a class C felony in Washington — with the same 5-years max in prison and $10k fine as small drug crimes, possession of stolen property, (non-grand) theft, witness tampering, and DUI. Far more prison time for child-molesting and other Class Bs.
But still a crime that strips people we know of their full citizenship nonetheless … and the kind of law that needs people like Rousso to stand against it … unless, of course, online poker players in Wash-State are just fine and dandy being criminals (on paper) while distinctly more atrocious acts exist outside the justice system’s reach.

Poker is Not a Crime: PPA to Hold Rally Outside Washington Supreme Court
WHAT:
Lee Rousso, PPA’s Washington State Director, will deliver oral arguments to the Washington State Supreme Court on May 27th, and the PPA will hold a rally and press conference outside the courthouse immediately following the hearing.
In Washington, playing poker online is now a felony–like child pornography or heroin possession–making any of the over 800,000 Washington residents who can legally play poker in card rooms look like hardened criminals if they play online. Russo is challenging the constitutionality of the law, arguing that it violates the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution, which reserves to Congress the right to regulate interstate and international commerce.
Professional Poker Player and Washington native Phil Gordon and PPA Chairman Former Senator Alfonse D’Amato will join with Washington State members of the PPA at the rally to show their support for Rousso’s efforts to keep poker legal.
WHO:
Senator Alfonse D’Amato, PPA Chairman
Lee Rousso, Washington State Director of the PPA
Phil Gordon, Washington native and Top National Poker Professional
John Pappas, Executive Director of the PPA
Local PPA Members
WHEN:
Thursday, May, 27, 2010
Approximately 10:00am PDT
WHERE:
Washington State Supreme Court
415 12th Ave SW
Olympia, WA 98504-0929

Thunderstruck 2 is a sequel that is even more fun than the original online slots game Thunderstruck. While many of the great features from the original are still in the game, a few new characters have been added that make the game even more interesting because they bring new features.
